Reflection: The D-day

A week after our presentation, 7 girls from 5th grade had come up to us and showed us their work. They made wonderful things out of newspaper like pen stands, paper bags, recycled paper, dustbins and they were mind blowing for such young kids. We discussed further and came up with the name Go pachai (Pachai means green in Tamil) and decided that 5th grade will have their own club called the Go pachai. I had meetings with them every Friday and we discussed on projects they would do over the next week. We once a had a D-day which stands for dustbin day where we replaced all the plastic dustbins with paper dustbins made by each class in an hour. The plastic dusbins were then re-used to grow more plants. These paper dustbins were durable and really creative. Over the course of next six months they did many activities and they also took care of the plants which bloomed beautifully. I had one session where I thought them on how to take care of plants, the techniques, everything and ever since then I never had to look after the plants in the 5th grade pod.
