Rajasthan Diaries: Holi hai!

7:00 am: I jump out of my bed and get chased by my uncle with colors in his hand. Fortunately my sister falls into the trap and I make a run.

8:00 am: Balloon fights begin. We run across houses faster than the speed of light to prevent being hit by a balloon. Any fellow pedestrian would be bombed the minute he/she stepped into our street.

9 am: We are out of balloon, so we take buckets and start pouring water down. The boys down are obviously getting anxious so they pull out their 'kodia' color which is an organically made strong color. It usually takes days to scrap this color off your body.

10 am: Every guy downstairs is colored in kodia black color from head to toe. They form circle and pull one guy in the center, remove his T shirt and color him which is followed by pouring black colored water. Watching them is hilarious but being one of them is nothing short of pain because around 10 people haul you and color you.

10:30 am: The uncles are making water showers using waste pipes and old Pepsi bottles. Truly 'jugadu'. They set up the shower and the DJ.

I am attacked from all sides
11:00 am: We are still running from our brother who have kodia ready in their hands. We oil our bodies so the color can be removed easily but they are too smart. They first color us with normal powdered colors, dust if off and then pour Kodia which becomes very difficult to remove.

12:00 am: After a lot of protesting and fighting I get dragged to the center and colored completely. It's the first time I played Holi in the proper way which made it even more important for everybody else to color to me. All the ladies and aunts peeked at us from the insides of the house. Everyone loves watching it but no one likes to get colored. Rain dance starts and DJ plays his beats

And that is my youngest grand dad
smearing me with dry color
1:00 pm: We are going around all the houses, pulling the ladies out, coloring them from feet to head with kodia. The same process repeats as all the ladies wantedly protest knowing they won't be spared. Well everyone secretly wants to be colored but pretend to resist it.

2:00 pm: We are in our respectively balconies, scrubbing our faces for the 100th time and yet the stubborn color decides to stay where it is. From balcony to balcony we shout and laugh, asking each other if the color reduced even by wee bit.

Snapchat making us look pretty
despite our pink ugly faces
4:00 pm: We are still scrubbing and waiting for our turn for the washroom. Our skins are burning because of the scrubbing but no one cares because we too busy laughing at each other and ruining each other's scrubbing session.

5:00 pm: fast asleep. Zzzzzzzz

7:00 pm: Wohooo, there is cake cutting in one of the four houses and we all run there before the cake gets over. Though we have enough cake and chocolates, it's always fun to chase your cousins and fight with them.

8:00 pm: I feel like I have a pink filter in my eye because everybody looks very pink. The colors are still on our faces and our hair is burgundy colored. We eat and play cards, as usual.
