Kho-Kho and Kabadi

Kabadi and Kho-kho are among the very old Indian games where teamwork and sharpness is required and as a part of CAS we got an opportunity to learn and play these in school. Most of us didn't know how to play but since I go to various camps, I was well versed with the rules of these games.

Mr.Sounder, our sports coordinator, is a trained kho-kho and kabadi player. He therefore began teaching us the rules and procedures.

Kho-kho is played by teams of twelve players, of which nine enter the field, who try to avoid being touched by members of the opposing team. Kabadi is a more complex game involving a lot of rules and strength.

We started with Kabadi. Since I was the only one in my team who knew the rules and game properly, I had to go first. Since I was small and quick I could easily move out and in but that's not the only thing required for kabadi as it's a very violent game. You need strength and quick reflexes. As we did not take each other too hard and seriously, we were able to play with injuring each other.

Next we moved on to Kho-kho and I personally like this game over Kabadi as it involved escaping the catcher and running quickly. Kho-kho involves a lot of chasing, running, squatting and panting too but the fun is worthwhile. This games improved our concentration and alertness as we had to watch out and be aware of what every player is doing.

Though I knew these games before, I realized that every area had some changes in the game. When I played in Andaman there was a slight difference in the way kabadi was played and here in Coimbatore there was a different way. This taught me that every place has it's own way of playing a sport and we need to respect these differences to enjoy a sport throughly.
