IIMUN Day 2
Duration:
13 hours
Today
was the day when all my training and rigorous hard work came into
action. I was in the DISEC committee and m agenda was legality of
drone warfare. I was the delegate of USA, who played a predominant
role in the drone strikes. It has been conducting strikes ever since
Bush's time. These strikes become more frequent during Obama's
presidency. When I entered the room I could see everybody's eyes
stuck on the placard of USA, they all searched for the person who
would take that seat and when I went and sat on that seat, I could
see all the eyes fixed on me and murmurs rising. Soon the delegate of
Qatar came up to me and said she was on my side.
Nervously
I sunk into my chair. I couldn't feel more scared with all 55 eyes
stuck on my placard. I quickly searched for the delegates of
Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea, Russia, China and Iran, all of
whom were in bad terms with USA.
Soon
the chair entered the room and had an introduction session. We then
moved into debate, starting with General Speakers List. The Chair
chose to go in the order of our choice but being the delegate of USA
I had no other choice but speak at the earliest to keep the committee
moving. My opening speech was assertive and clear. I quoted Obama
saying “I have made it clear that we will hunt down terrorists who
threaten our country, wherever they are. This is a core principle of
my presidency: if you threaten America, you will find no safe haven”
This
way I made my stand clear that the US strongly believes that drones
are the most effective and efficient way to counter terrorism and
weaken them. Drones and UAVs does not only reduce civilian casualties
but are also relatively accurate and successful. Drone strikes, in
US's opinion, are quicker and constructive and the US will continue
to perform drone strikes until it has rooted up all the terrorist
groups threatening the US.
There
were a lot of oohs and woos in the room but I chose to ignore them
and yield my time to questions which were raised by delegate of China
and Saudi Arabia. After this there were various speeches and I
meticulously noted the countries on my side. First session consisted
only of GSL while the second committee session was full of joint
statements and presidential statements.
In
the first time of human history, DPRK and South Korea had made a
joint statement of becoming friends and producing drones. Eventually
USA had to cut alliances with South Korea for shaking hands with it's
enemies. Again, India and China made a joint statement against USA, I
lost another ally. Finally France ditched UK and eventually USA too.
The committee went upside down. Everything in my favor was now
against me. I didn't know what to do and this is when one friend
suggested to use their policies against them. This is when I went up
to France and reminded him about is policy who then agreed to stay on
my side. I continued lobbying and debating during unmods. Soon there
were two solid blocs, one with USA and one against.
We
had a few mods and I submitted my working papers in the end. I had
lost hopes in my committee when they changed their policies totally.
We
then had a social event which had dance and lobbying again.
